How To Shave Your Face: A Guide To Men’s Shaving

Most Men Take Shaving For Granted

Not much thought may be put into it.  Times are also hectic, with little time to spare for grooming basics.  Many men pay little attention to shaving, and that leads to cuts, nicks, and irritated skin.  Redness of the skin and a burning feeling can occur.  This redness and burning is referred to as “razor burn”.  It is the most common complaint of men after shaving.  The denser the hair, the more common razor burn becomes.  Add to this the fact that many men now not only shave their facial hair but also their entire sections of body hair, as this is the new aesthetic within society of today in many areas of the world.  According to GQ, (Gentleman’s Quarterly), one of the most prestigious magazines in the world today, hair removal by men is not limited to facial hair but waxing of other body parts or other methods is preferred over shaving.  Facial hair shaving is still the most common type of shaving for men and usually is done each day or at least every second or third day depending upon the density of hair and the growth rate.  The amount of keratin in a person’s body determines growth rate of both hair and fingernails and all individuals will have a different growth rate.

This Brings Us To The Correct Methods Of Shaving Male Facial Hair

In order to prevent razor burn, nicks and cuts, and overall redness, there are a few methods that are quick and easy and should be used each time when shaving.

Hydration of the face and neck area.  Using water to completely saturate the shaving area should be done before proceeding with shaving.  Dry shaving is to be avoided at all costs as this literally just drags the blade along and pulls both the hair and the skin underneath it.  A good idea is to shower first, and then shave, as the hot water from the shower naturally hydrate the face and softens the facial hair.

Moisturization should be the next step.  A quality shaving foam should be used, but if none is available, at least a lathering of soap and water of the facial hair should take place.  This should be left on for a few minutes before proceeding with the shave, to allow the hair to absorb the foam or lather and to ensure that the hair has been sufficiently softened.  The softer the hair, the less pulling or dragging that occurs while shaving.

Technique counts.  Light short strokes are better than long strokes that drag and pull.  The strokes should be both with the grain of the hair and against the grain, as this ensures complete coverage with less repetition.  Hair can grow out in more than one direction and using this method of stroking makes the process both quicker and more enjoyable, while also preventing razor burn.  Avoid using a heavy hand.  Lightly shaving is the best way to prevent razor burn or other problems such as cuts.

Rinse the blade often during shaving.  Buildup of foam and hair will prevent a facial shave from proceeding without discomfort.  Keeping the water running while shaving and rinsing the blade after every two or three strokes is most efficient.

Use a contoured blade of the highest quality affordable.  Cheap, straight blades do not automatically slide along smoothly across the face.  A contoured blade is bent in such a way as to hug the skin.  Some shavers also have a pivoting head that adjusts and swivels and these can give a smoother and easier shave.

Check the blade of any shaver often.  Whether a disposable type of shaver, or one where the blades are changed manually, the truth is that blades dull quite quickly.  A dull blade will never give a clean, close or enjoyable shave.  Not changing the blades often enough if one of the major mistakes made while shaving.

Do not dry any shaving blade on a towel.  This automatically dulls it.  Shaking a shaver or blade off in a sink and then allowing it to air dry will keep the blade sharper and more efficient over the long run.

Use aftershave that contains moisturizer, or a plain moisturizer itself immediately after shaving.  Blotting some water off the face can be done but leaving the face a bit damp will ensure that the aftershave or moisturizer traps the moisture and keeps the skin smoother and more supple between shaves.

The Above Steps Are The Basics Of An Enjoyable Yet Close, Lasting Shave

There are many other techniques however, that are involved in the newest trend of “manscaping.”   There are many styles that men now use on their facial hair, from leaving just a close crop of stubble, for a light look of trendiness, or those that grow full beards, yet shave the sides into all types of angles.  Special grooming tools, called edge trimmers are used by men desiring a more designed and unique look and are available in both disposable and electric style shavers.   The basic techniques however, for a smooth, close shave, are however still applicable, and should still be applied.  Shaving for men is a lifetime experience and knowing how to do it correctly will make it an enjoyable experience, not a grueling chore.  Done correctly, a well shaved male face is enhanced in appearance, while a razor burned, or nicked up and cut appearance is never attractive or comfortable.  Simply taking the small amount of time to embrace and use the techniques above can assist any man in acquiring the perfect shave.

Take time also to acquire a quality shaver, either disposable, manual, or battery operated.  The quality of a blade does make a world of difference, and the money spent on quality will pay off in durability of the blade and the comfort of any shaving routine.  There is no need to dread the experience of shaving or to see it as a chore.  It can be relaxing and lead to more confidence in a man’s appearance if it is done correctly.  Choices abound now in shavers and products to enhance the experience.  Make the most out of each shave!
